Full disclosure: I work for a property & casualty insurance company, handling auto claims… but it is not Allstate.
I’ve enjoyed the Allstate series of commercials with the character “Mayhem.”
You know the ones.
But today, I heard an ad on the radio in which Mayhem is handling a claims automated phone response system for a “cut-rate” insurance company, saying things like “To be transferred to the wrong person, press 1. To be put on hold for forty minutes and then disconnected, press 2. To repeat your story to the entire company, including the cleaning staff, press 3. To do something that isn’t stupid, hang up and call Allstate.”
To which I had three reactions.
First: since I regularly have to call other companies, I can say with confidence that the company that keeps me on hold the longest and that can’t seem to get me in touch with the right person isn’t a cut-rate one. It’s a huge one.
Second: hanging up and calling Allstate when you’re trying to report a claim or get info on your claim is stupid, if your claim has nothing to do with Allstate.
Third: WAIT A MINUTE. Mayhem wants to get his way. Mayhem has told us over and over again to avoid him via Allstate, but in the past I could pass it off as him complaining about his archnemesis.
But in THIS ad, he FLAT OUT TELLS YOU TO LEAVE YOUR COMPANY AND SWITCH TO ALLSTATE. He SUPPORTS Allstate. He’s not their enemy.
HE’S THEIR GOON.
It’s a protection racket! Somebody bring them up on Rico charges!
